The lost art of wedding photography

One of the beautiful lessons that Lymphoma has taught me is the appreciation for life and the importance of being true to oneself. This includes embracing thoughts and opinions that I previously held back. Cancer has also stripped away certain perceived needs, such as the urge to impress and the tendency to give in. To capitulate to an industry that, in my opinion, has lost it's way, I will no longer do. I will, however, only speak on what I know and have experienced throughout my career. My intent is not to offend but to enlighten the wedding community and our clientele. Myself included.
Rediscovering the Why: Beyond Repetitive Styles
Gone are the days when wedding photographs were treasured narratives of a couple's unique journey. Today, we find ourselves ensnared in a web of stylistic monotony, where the individual story is often lost. The true magic of wedding photography lies in its ability capture truth of the couple’s emotions, the spontaneous laughter, and the tears of joy. Yet, the repetitive style of todays wedding photography frequently overlooks these unscripted moments, favoring instead a homogenized look that offers little room for personalization or genuine sentiment.
This shift toward this cookie-cutter presentation not only undermines the artistry involved in capturing significant life events but also robs couples of the chance to see their own stories truly reflected in their heirloom books. Photographic techniques once used to enhance the storytelling, now serve to replicate an all-too-familiar narrative, leaving little to the imagination and even less to the memory.
Emotion in Every Snapshot: What's Missing Today?
The heart of wedding photography beats within the raw, unfiltered emotions displayed during such a monumental day. Yet, as the industry leans more into aesthetically pleasing but emotionally void compositions, the depth of these moments is often left uncaptured. The transition from emotion-centered photographs to visually driven content promoting planners and vendors instead of the client has created a gaping void where the beauty of the couple and their love story should be. The modern-day emphasis on creating 'Instagram-worthy' images detracts from the real beauty that unfolds naturally, pushing the narrative that appearance trumps feeling.
What's truly missing from today's wedding photography is the spontaneous capturing of laughter, the tears wiped away in a quiet moment, the anxious fidgeting of hands before saying 'I do,' or the warm, comforting embraces between loved ones. These are the fragments of time that, when pieced together, form the beautiful mosaic of a couple's wedding day. Without them, we're left with a collection of pretty yet hollow images that fail to evoke the day's true emotions.
The Forgotten Art of Capturing Moments
Wedding photography is an art form that demands an acute sense of awareness, an eye for detail, and an innate ability to foresee moments before they unfold. Historically, photographers thrived on the unpredictability of weddings, using their skills to capture the essence of each unique celebration. However, this art of observational storytelling has been overshadowed by the demand for posed and manufactured moments, leaving little space for the spontaneous and genuine. How many "foreheads together moments" can we see? Guilty as charged.

In pursuit of perfection, the industry has lost sight of what makes wedding photography so special - its ability to freeze time, to capture a look, a touch, a feeling, that can never be replicated. Thank you wedding blogs. The soul of wedding photography, must be reclaimed if we're to preserve the integrity and beauty of this timeless tradition and artform.
